1. Matterhorn: The Iconic Pyramid

Standing proudly on the border between Switzerland and Italy, the Matterhorn’s characteristic pyramid shape makes it one of the most famous peaks in Switzerland.

The first documented successful ascend to the peak of Matterhorn took place in 1865 by young British mountaineers Edward Whymper, Lord Francis Douglas, Charles Hudson, Douglas Hadow, and Michel Croz, led by the local guide Peter Taugwalder. The excursion, tragically, ended in the death of three of the six team members.

Infamous for its quickly changing conditions and steep ascents, Matterhorn captivates the imagination of many until today.

Its iconic crooked silhouette is a part of Swiss visual identity and can be used by brands that produce their goods in Switzerland from Swiss-sourced ingredients.

2. Monte Rosa: The Majestic Ice-Covered Summit

Monte Rosa reigns supreme as a four-faced massif in the Pennine Alps on the border between Italy and Switzerland. One of its peaks is Dufourspitze, the highest peak in Switzerland entirely on Swiss soil and the second highest in Europe after Mont Blanc.

It rises at a staggering 4,634 m (15,203 ft), dominating the Pennine Alps with its glacier-draped summit. Mountaineers are drawn to its lofty heights, offering mesmerizing views of a landscape blanketed in ice and rock, showcasing the raw grandeur of the Swiss Alps.

While it’s not so difficult to climb, the danger here lies mostly in quickly changing weather conditions. However, less well-known than Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and Dufourspitze are one of the most famous peaks in Switzerland.

3. Eiger: The Notorious North Face

Part of the Bernese Alps, and the mighty trio of Jungfrau Region, the Eiger stands as a testament to mountaineering prowess with its notorious north face.

It’s the largest north face in Europe, conquered only in 1938 by an Austrian-German expedition. Its treacherous climbing routes, including the famed Eiger Trail, have earned it a formidable reputation in the world of climbing.

The mountain’s history and cultural significance continue to captivate enthusiasts and spectators alike. The name Eiger means “the ogre”, and is commonly linked back to Latin “acer” meaning sharp.

4. Jungfrau: Virgin Of The Alps

Nestled within the Bernese Alps, the Jungfrau is a quintessential part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. Jungfrau, meaning “the virgin” is part of a famous trio of peaks, Jungfrau, Eiger, and Mönch. While Eiger stuns with its ominous north face, it is Jungfrau’s round copular peak and proportional silhouette that make it one of the most famous peaks in Switzerland.   Accessible via the Jungfrau Railway, the Jungfrau Peak offers a breathtaking panorama from its summit. The “top Of Europe” experience provided by the station makes Jungfraujoch a worthwhile destination. Tourists are enchanted by its blend of natural beauty and a plethora of adventure activities, such as Ice Palace, the Sphinx and variety of dining experiences.

5. Pilatus: The Legendary Mountain

Pilatus stands as an iconic peak near Lucerne, offering panoramic views and an array of hiking trails. Its proximity to Lucerne makes it a popular destination for visitors seeking breathtaking vistas and outdoor adventures. Accessible by the Pilatus Railway or hiking trails, it invites explorers to experience its timeless charm.
