Bernina Express Railway in the Swiss Alps

On the highest railway across the Alps, the Bernina Express climbs up to the glistening glaciers. Surprisingly this is not a rack railway and the train winds its way gently through splendid scenery.

The Bernina Express uses gradients of 7% to negotiate the difference in height of about 6,000 ft. from the summit at Ospizio Bernina.

The Bernina line was declared a World Heritage Site in 2008.. The entire line is 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) (metre gauge) and electrified.

We board the train in St. Moritz and ascend progressively through the valley to the Bernina Pass over the Morteratsch station (1,896 m), where the glacier and the highest summit of the Eastern Alps, Piz Bernina, 13,425 ft. are visible. The Bernina Express reaches the summit at the Ospizio Bernina station at 7,300 ft.

We stop and get out at Alp Grüm, 7,391 ft. and view the Piz Palü 12,800 ft mountain peak and its glacier.
Afterwards we board the Bernina railway and stop off at the Diavolezza cable car station and ride up to the 9,800 ft. summit and view the awesome surrounding Bernina Mountain 13,000 ft. peaks.

Often you will see little black spots on the glacier. These are mountain climbers descending o the Diavolezza restaurant where you can often hear them talk about their incredible Bernina Mountain climbing experiences.
